Lewis Littlechild rediscovered his goalscoring touch as the Reserves made heavy work of seeing off strugglers Bovingdon.
With Wayne Blows called up to the first team and skipper Barry Laurence a late withdrawal through injury, Sean Ennis had just 12 players available for the trip to Green Lane. The returning Adam Shelley partnered Littlechild up front, whilst Beadsworth moved from left back to a centre half role alongside Lee Buck.
On the host's big heavy pitch, Town's second string really struggled to get any fluency to their play and the opening twenty minutes was possibly as poor as they have been all season with many passes going astray and the performance generally being flat.
No-one in a red shirt seemed to be at the races and a warning sign came when a ball over the top gave a home forward a chance to score, but despite losing his footing - keeper Michael Johnson pulled off an excellent stop.
Despite not looking overly dangerous, it came as no surprise when Bovingdon took the lead. Another long ball over the top caught the Town defence out and the young forward superbly brought the ball down with the outside of his foot before confidently poking past Johnson to open the scoring.
The Town response was immediate. Straight from the kick off, Baldock created the move of the half starting with Jon Bond. The ball was worked to Adam Shelley on the edge of the area and he slipped Littlechild in behind who rounded the keeper and netted from an acute angle.
The remainder of the half was largely dominated by the visitors, but they were unable to force any further openings before the interval.
After the break, Town introduced Adam Furness for Paul Regan and he immediately injected some much needed energy into the Baldock performance. Shortly after Sam Crow picked up the ball on the right and swung a deep cross to the far post where Furness managed to keep the ball in. With options for the pull back, Furness decided to go alone and his effort went in from the most impossible of angles.
Bovingdon seemed to run out of steam and created very little after going behind. However, the visitors performance had been lifted by the lively Furness and his verve from the left hand side certainly made Baldock look more dangerous going forward.
Adam Shelley wasted a great chance to make the game safe when he was put through one-on-one, but his hesitation saw the opportunity closed out. However, Littlechild did make the points safe shortly after when fine work from Karl Beadsworth on the edge of the box saw the ball threaded through and Littlechild confidently slotted home.
Crow could've put some gloss on the scoreline late on when he cut inside, but his close range effort was saved by the keeper.
Overall, Sean Ennis and his players will be pleased to have got the three points, but against stronger opposition they may not have got the same result. At this time of the season, the victory is all that matters, but they must play better next time out as Met Police Bushey visit Gaunts Way as Baldock look to avenge a 4-1 defeat in December.
